Chickenpox in mouth relief

Chickenpox can cause small spots or blisters on moist surfaces inside the mouth as well as on the skin. They may sting when swallowing, and broken blisters can become shallow ulcers. Discomfort may reduce how much a child or adult drinks, so hydration is a central part of home care. A sore mouth can occur alongside fever and an itchy skin rash; it does not by itself show whether the illness is chickenpox or another infection.

Offer cool or lukewarm water and other non-acidic fluids in frequent small sips. Choose soft foods such as yoghurt, porridge, or soup that is not hot, and avoid spicy, salty, acidic, or rough foods while the sores are tender. Do not scratch or pick at nearby blisters. A pharmacist or clinician can advise which pain relief is appropriate for the person’s age and health; children should not be given aspirin. Oral antihistamine treatment may help itch, but it does not heal mouth sores, so use it only as advised.

Arrange prompt medical advice if mouth pain makes drinking difficult, urine becomes unusually infrequent or dark, or the person is unusually sleepy. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, severe headache, confusion, or a rapidly worsening condition. Contact a clinician early if the person is pregnant, very young, has a weakened immune system, or has extensive skin blisters, because treatment decisions may depend on these factors.

Ask which pain relief and mouth-care products are suitable, how to recognise dehydration, and whether antiviral treatment is appropriate. Tell the clinician when the rash began, whether drinking has changed, and whether there has been close contact with anyone at higher risk.
