The illness may begin with fever, reduced appetite, or feeling unwell, followed by itchy spots that become blisters. New lesions can appear for several days, then dry and crust. Recovery is better judged by the end of new blister formation, improving energy, and normal drinking and urination rather than by the rash alone. Scratching can open the skin and extend healing or leave marks. Adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immunity may have a more difficult course and should obtain personalised advice.

Rest, drink regularly, and keep the skin clean. Cool baths, loose clothing, and clinician-approved itch relief may make sleep easier. Avoid picking scabs and keep nails short. Use fever medicine exactly as advised; do not give aspirin to a child or teenager, and ask before using ibuprofen. A GP consultation is useful when the diagnosis is uncertain, symptoms are intense, or antiviral treatment may be considered early in the illness.

Arrange medical assessment if new blisters continue without improvement, fever persists or returns, or a lesion becomes hot, increasingly painful, swollen, or pus-filled. Seek urgent help for breathing problems, confusion, severe drowsiness, dehydration, repeated vomiting, or a severe headache with neck stiffness. Get advice sooner if the person is pregnant, immunocompromised, or very young.

Ask whether the healing pattern is expected, how to manage itching without damaging the skin, when isolation can end, and whether lingering marks need review. Mention any new fever or increasing pain.
