Chicken skin on the underarm: causes and next steps

Keratosis pilaris usually causes numerous small, rough follicle-based bumps. The underarm is also exposed to sweat, rubbing, hair removal, and personal-care products, which can inflame follicles or irritate the skin barrier. Folliculitis may cause individual tender red bumps or pustules. A painful deep lump is not typical simple chicken skin and should be assessed.

Pause shaving, waxing, and fragranced deodorant if they sting or worsen the area. Clean gently, rinse well, and pat dry. Choose loose, breathable clothing and avoid squeezing bumps. Once the skin is calm, a healthcare professional can advise whether a mild exfoliating ingredient is suitable; acids may irritate freshly shaved or broken skin.

Arrange an examination for a deep or recurring lump, increasing pain, warmth, pus, spreading redness, or scarring. Seek prompt care if fever or marked illness accompanies the skin change. A clinician can check for folliculitis, an ingrown hair, contact irritation, or another underarm condition.

Ask whether the bumps are follicular, irritant, or infectious; when hair removal can safely resume; and which deodorant or moisturiser is least likely to irritate you. Mention any deep lumps, drainage, repeated episodes, or dark marks left after healing.
