Chest X-Ray and Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension means increased pressure in the blood vessels carrying blood from the heart to the lungs. Imaging may suggest changes in the size or shape of the heart or larger lung blood vessels, or show another explanation for breathlessness. These appearances are clues rather than a final answer. Similar symptoms can occur with heart failure, lung disease, anaemia or reduced fitness, while a chest X-ray can look unremarkable in some people with pulmonary hypertension.

Discuss the result with the clinician who requested it, especially if you have breathlessness with activity, unusual tiredness, dizziness or ankle swelling. Assessment may include an oxygen check, blood tests, an electrocardiogram and an echocardiogram to examine heart structure and function. Further specialist testing is chosen according to your symptoms and initial findings. Share information about sleep apnoea, kidney disease, heart problems and medicines, because these can affect the assessment and treatment plan.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness at rest, fainting, sudden chest pain, new blue lips or sudden weakness affecting one side of the body. Seek prompt clinical advice if exercise tolerance is falling quickly, swelling is increasing, or you are waking breathless. A chest image is not a reason to wait through a serious change in symptoms.

Ask what was seen, whether the finding points to the heart or lungs, which test is next, and whether you should change activity while assessment continues.
