What should you know about chest tightness due to cough?

Repeated coughing can strain chest muscles and inflame the tubes that carry air, creating pressure, soreness or a feeling that breathing takes effort. Wheezing, phlegm or breathlessness can occur with asthma or COPD; acid travelling upwards can trigger cough and chest discomfort. Anxiety can also intensify the sensation. A cough may be a common presentation of these conditions, but chest tightness does not identify one cause by itself.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoke, dust and strong scents. Notice whether the cough is dry or productive, when the tightness appears, and whether activity, lying down or cold air changes it. Do not start someone else’s inhaler or antibiotics. A clinician can listen to your chest and decide whether treatment such as inhaler therapy or further assessment is appropriate.

Seek emergency help for severe or worsening tightness, marked difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, coughing blood, or discomfort spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Arrange prompt medical assessment if symptoms keep returning, follow exertion, disturb sleep, or come with fever or worsening breathlessness.
