Chest Tightness with Cough and Sore Throat

A viral respiratory illness can irritate the throat and larger airways, leading to cough and a tight or uncomfortable chest. Asthma or COPD may flare when an infection irritates already sensitive airways, with wheeze or breathlessness. Reflux can irritate the throat and provoke cough, especially after meals or when lying down. Angina is less likely to explain a sore throat, but chest pressure should not be dismissed because another symptom is present.

Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoke and vaping, and choose warm or soothing drinks if they help your throat. Monitor breathing, fever, cough, and whether tightness follows activity. Use prescribed medicines according to your plan; do not share inhalers or start antibiotics without medical advice. Arrange a review if symptoms are worsening, recurring, or not settling as expected.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, inability to speak comfortably, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, severe or persistent chest pressure, or discomfort spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Get urgent advice if swallowing becomes difficult, the throat feels rapidly swollen, or breathing worsens quickly.

Ask whether your chest symptoms fit an infection, airway flare, or reflux; whether you need an examination or breathing test; and how to recognise deterioration. Mention fever, sputum, allergies, asthma or COPD history, and recent exposures.
