What should you know about chest heaviness shortness of breath fatigue?

Chest heaviness can accompany breathlessness when the heart or lungs are under strain. [Angina](/conditions/angina/) is one possible heart-related cause, while [Atrial Fibrillation](/conditions/atrial-fibrillation/) may cause an irregular heartbeat, reduced stamina or breathlessness. [Asthma](/conditions/asthma/) can bring chest tightness and wheeze; [COPD](/conditions/copd/) and [Bronchiectasis](/conditions/bronchiectasis/) may cause ongoing cough, mucus and limited exercise tolerance.

Tiredness and breathlessness can also occur with [Anaemia](/conditions/anaemia/) because less oxygen is carried in the blood. [Acute Bronchitis](/conditions/acute-bronchitis/) may cause cough and temporary chest discomfort. A severe allergic reaction, called [Anaphylaxis](/conditions/anaphylaxis/), can cause rapid breathing difficulty with swelling, hives or throat tightness. The pattern, speed of onset and associated signs help guide assessment.

Stop exertion and sit upright. Note when symptoms started, whether they follow activity, whether you have fever or cough, and whether your heartbeat feels irregular. Use a prescribed inhaler or other medicine only as directed. Arrange prompt clinical review for recurring symptoms, reduced exercise tolerance or unexplained fatigue; a clinician may check your heart, lungs, oxygen level and blood count.

Call emergency services for sudden or severe chest heaviness, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, coughing blood, cold sweating, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Do not drive yourself, and do not wait for fatigue to improve if breathing is worsening.
