Chemical Peel on Stretch Marks: Before and After

Stretch marks are formed when deeper skin structures change during growth, pregnancy, or body-size changes. A peel acts mainly at the surface, so it may affect colour contrast or fine texture more than the underlying lines. Newer marks can look red, purple, or brown; older marks often look lighter and indented. Photographs can be altered by lighting, camera distance, skin hydration, and tanning, so an image is not a guarantee of the same result.

A clinician should check whether the lines are truly stretch marks and whether active irritation or another pigment condition is present. Treating inflamed skin can make the colour difference more noticeable.

Bring realistic goals and ask whether a peel is being used for colour, texture, or both. Disclose your skin tone, tendency to darken after irritation, previous peels, medicines, pregnancy status, and any history of raised scars. Avoid tanning and irritating hair-removal methods before treatment. During recovery, moisturise as directed, do not scratch or peel loose skin, reduce friction, and protect the area from sunlight.

Contact the provider if pain, swelling, redness, blistering, oozing, or tenderness is severe or worsening. Arrange assessment for a new rapidly changing mark rather than treating it cosmetically. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat. Mild warmth, dryness, and flaking can occur after exfoliation, but worsening symptoms are not a reason to wait.

Ask what improvement is realistic for your mark type, whether a test area should be treated first, and how many visits or recovery periods may be needed. Ask how before-and-after photos were taken, what alternatives exist, and how pigment changes would be managed if they occur.
