Chemical Peel and Microdermabrasion: What to Know

Microdermabrasion uses a device to buff away superficial dead cells and may leave the skin temporarily pink, tight, or more sensitive. A chemical peel applies an active solution, such as an exfoliating acid, and can produce warmth, stinging, flaking, or visible peeling depending on its strength. Neither treatment removes every scar, wrinkle, or pigment change, and results vary by the problem being treated.

A clinician should review active eczema, infection, cold sores, recent sun exposure, medication use, and a history of raised scars before treatment. Skin that marks easily may need a cautious plan, especially with a peel.

Beforehand, disclose retinoids, acne medicines, hair-removal treatments, and any previous reaction to exfoliants. Follow the provider's instructions about pausing products. Afterward, use a bland moisturiser, avoid picking or scrubbing, and protect treated skin from sunlight with clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen. Do not combine freshly treated skin with other strong exfoliants until it has settled.

Contact the treating clinician promptly for worsening pain, marked swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, blisters, or a reaction involving the eyes or breathing. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty. Mild warmth, pinkness, dryness, or planned flaking can occur, but symptoms that intensify rather than improve need assessment.

Ask which treatment matches your specific concern, what strength or device setting is planned, how long sensitivity may last, and which products to stop or restart. Ask how your skin tone and history of pigmentation change the plan, and what alternative treatment would be considered if exfoliation is unsuitable.
