Chemical Peel for Keratosis Pilaris: What to Know

Keratosis pilaris is linked with keratin blocking hair follicles, producing small rough bumps commonly on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. A peel can loosen some surface buildup and improve feel, but it does not change the underlying tendency of follicles to block.

Redness, dark marks, itching, or pus may point to irritation or another problem. Ingrown hairs and other skin bumps can look similar, so an examination is useful when the pattern is new, painful, or limited to one area.

A clinician may recommend an emollient therapy routine to soften and hydrate the rough surface. Topical retinoids or a carefully selected peel may be discussed when appropriate. Apply products gradually, avoid rough scrubbing, and stop an exfoliant that causes persistent burning or worsening redness.

After a peel, keep the area moisturised, use sunscreen on exposed skin, and avoid shaving, waxing, fragrance, and additional acids until recovery. Laser hair removal may be considered when hair-related irritation contributes to the bumps, but it is not a universal treatment for keratosis pilaris.
