Chemical Burn Scar Removal: What to Know

A chemical burn can damage more than the surface layer of skin. During healing, the body may produce firm, discoloured, depressed, or thickened scar tissue. A scar across a joint, eyelid, mouth, or other mobile area can also contract and restrict movement. Colour changes may continue after the wound has closed, and the final appearance can take time to settle.

Treatment is chosen after an examination of the scar, the original injury, skin tone, texture, flexibility, and symptoms such as itch or tenderness. Scar care aims to improve function, texture, colour, or visibility; it may not erase the mark completely.

Do not apply peels, strong acids, bleaching products, or home resurfacing devices to a recently injured area. Keep the wound care plan provided by your clinician, protect healed skin from sunlight, and avoid picking or repeatedly rubbing the scar.

Once the skin is fully closed and medically ready, options may include silicone-based scar care, supervised laser treatment, steroid treatment for selected raised scars, scar revision surgery, or a skin graft when damaged tissue and function require reconstruction. Fractional laser treatment can be considered for some established scars, while surgery is reserved for selected shapes, tight bands, or areas where function is affected. More than one approach may be used at different stages.

A chemical burn needs prompt medical assessment if the skin is still open, the pain is increasing, blisters are extensive, or the injury involves the eyes, face, hands, genitals, or a large area. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, eye symptoms, faintness, or chemical exposure that has not been thoroughly rinsed as directed by emergency services.

After healing, arrange review if the scar becomes increasingly raised, itchy, painful, tight, warm, swollen, or draining, or if movement is becoming harder. These changes can reflect active scar formation, irritation, infection, or contracture and need examination before cosmetic treatment.

Ask which scar features are being treated, whether the skin is ready for intervention, how the plan may affect pigmentation, and whether improving movement is a priority. You can also ask about expected healing, aftercare, the possibility of staged treatment, and what symptoms should prompt an earlier review.
