Chemical breakage of hair: causes and next steps

Breakage is hair snapping along its length rather than shedding from the root. You may notice shorter pieces, split ends, rough texture, loss of curl definition or uneven length after relaxing, colouring, bleaching or repeated heat styling. Overlapping treatments, leaving chemicals on too long or applying them to already processed lengths can make the shaft more fragile. Breakage itself does not establish a scalp diagnosis.

Pause chemical processing until the hair is stronger, and avoid applying a fresh treatment over previously processed lengths. Detangle slowly with conditioner, use a wide-tooth comb, reduce high heat and avoid tight styles, vigorous brushing and rough towel drying. Regular trims can remove split ends, but they cannot repair a broken shaft. A stylist or dermatologist can help separate shaft damage from a problem affecting the scalp.

Keep the scalp comfortable and avoid products that burn or inflame it. If there is itching, scaling, tenderness or thinning at the hairline, the next step should be an assessment rather than more processing.

Book a dermatology review for sudden widespread breakage, scalp pain, marked itching, thick scale, sores, patchy hair loss or a receding hairline. Scalp ringworm can cause scale and broken hairs, while traction alopecia is associated with repeated pulling; these need different management. Seek prompt care for swelling, pus or rapidly worsening scalp inflammation.

Ask whether the pattern fits shaft damage or hair loss from the root, which products should be paused, and whether the scalp needs examination or testing. Share the timing of each chemical service and any symptoms that began afterward.
