What should you know about cheilitis burning lips?

Short answer
Cheilitis with burning lips reflects irritation or inflammation of the lip surface, and persistent burning should be assessed so triggers and appropriate treatment are not missed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the burning sensation
Burning may accompany dryness, peeling, redness, tightness, or fine cracks. Lip licking, wind, heat, spicy foods, flavourings, toothpaste, cosmetics, and fragranced products can aggravate a weakened barrier. Contact allergy, eczema, infection, medication effects, and conditions affecting the mouth can cause similar discomfort, so burning alone does not identify one diagnosis.
A clinician may examine the lips and mouth and ask about timing, meals, products, medicines, dental materials, and whether the tongue or gums feel different. Note what makes the sensation better or worse.
Comfort and treatment
Use lukewarm water, avoid licking and rubbing, and pause products with fragrance, flavour, or active ingredients. Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturising barrier regularly; Emollient Therapy describes this type of supportive care. Sip fluids if your mouth feels dry, and avoid foods that clearly worsen the burning while the skin heals.
If examination shows significant inflammation, a clinician may prescribe Topical Corticosteroids for short, directed use. Do not use leftover creams on the lips without advice. If symptoms began after a new product or medicine, mention the timing rather than stopping a prescribed medicine on your own.
When to seek medical help
Arrange review if burning persists, returns often, causes fissures, or is accompanied by mouth sores, swelling, or difficulty eating. Seek urgent care for sudden lip or tongue swelling, hives, wheezing, faintness, or trouble breathing. Rapid worsening after a product or medicine needs prompt attention.
Questions for your doctor
Could a product, food, medicine, or dental material be responsible? Do I have visible inflammation or another mouth condition? Which barrier is safe? Would testing help? What symptoms mean I should seek urgent care?

Questions people ask
Why do my lips burn when they look normal?
Early irritation, contact sensitivity, dryness, or a mouth-related condition can cause discomfort before obvious changes appear. Persistent symptoms merit an examination.
Should I use a numbing product?
Numbing products may irritate sensitive lips or mask worsening symptoms. Ask a clinician about a safer way to manage discomfort.
