Cetuximab and lung cancer

Whether it is considered depends on the precise cancer type, tumour features, previous therapy, overall health and locally available options. A recommendation should come with a clear explanation of its purpose and alternatives.

Cetuximab is a monoclonal antibody that attaches to epidermal growth factor receptor, or EGFR, on the cell surface. This can interfere with growth signals. It is different from tablets designed for particular EGFR gene changes, so the word “EGFR” does not make those medicines interchangeable. Tumour classification and molecular results help the oncology team decide which targeted approach, if any, fits the diagnosis. Cetuximab is given into a vein under observation because a reaction can occur during administration.

Request the exact name and subtype of your lung cancer and ask which test result supports the plan. Give the team a full medicine and allergy list, including any previous reaction to an antibody infusion. Blood tests may be used to monitor salts and organ function. Report new acne-like rash, cracked skin, nail-fold soreness, diarrhoea, mouth problems or eye irritation early; supportive treatment can reduce discomfort and help prevent infection. Protect treated skin from strong sunlight and use products recommended by your care team.

During an infusion, alert the nurse at once about breathlessness, wheezing, throat tightness, chest discomfort, sudden flushing, chills, dizziness or swelling. Away from the clinic, seek urgent care for trouble breathing, collapse, confusion, severe weakness, or rapidly spreading blistered or peeling skin. Contact the oncology service promptly for fever, a painful or oozing rash, persistent diarrhoea, inability to drink, reduced urination or worsening eye pain. Use the team's emergency number rather than waiting for the next appointment.
