Short answer

Certain Dri prescription-strength clinical antiperspirant reduces sweating by temporarily narrowing the openings of sweat ducts, but it must be applied carefully to limit irritation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Active ingredient
Aluminium chloride
Main purpose
Reduce sweating at the skin surface
Avoid applying to
Broken, damp, freshly shaved, or inflamed skin

How it works

The active ingredient is aluminium chloride, which reacts with moisture at the sweat duct opening and forms a temporary plug. It is used on intact, dry skin in areas such as the underarms, hands, feet, or scalp when advised. It is different from deodorant: deodorant mainly addresses smell, while an antiperspirant targets sweat production at the skin surface.

Stinging, itching, dryness, or redness can occur, particularly when the product is applied after shaving, to damp skin, or more often than directed. Irritated skin folds can also develop intertrigo, where moisture and friction cause soreness.

How to use it safely

Follow the product directions or your clinician's plan. Apply a thin layer to completely dry skin, often at night when sweating is lower, and wash the area as instructed. Avoid broken, freshly shaved, inflamed, or infected skin, and keep the product away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Wash your hands after application unless the hands are the treated area.

Stop and seek advice if burning or rash persists. If sweating remains disruptive despite careful use, discuss Prescription Antiperspirant options and whether another cause needs assessment.

When to seek care promptly

Seek medical advice for severe swelling, blistering, persistent pain, or a rash that spreads beyond the application area. Sudden heavy sweating with chest pain, faintness, breathing trouble, confusion, or weakness needs urgent care. A new pattern of sweating, especially with fever or unexplained weight change, also merits clinical review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which areas can be treated, how often to apply the product, what to do after shaving, and when to pause it. Ask whether your sweating fits Excessive Sweating, whether Body Odour has another cause, and how to manage irritation in skin folds.

Questions people ask

Can it be used as a deodorant?

It may reduce sweat that contributes to odour, but it is an antiperspirant rather than a product designed only to mask smell.

Why does it sting?

Moisture, shaving, overapplication, or already irritated skin can make aluminium chloride more irritating.
