Central refers to the middle of the scalp, centrifugal means moving outward, and cicatricial means scarring. In this condition, inflammation can damage hair follicles; a shiny or smooth area may develop, with reduced visible follicle openings. It can affect people with skin of colour and may be mistaken for ordinary thinning or hair breakage. Itching, tenderness, burning, or scalp scaling can occur, but symptoms differ between people.
