What should you know about cellulitis untreated?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin and soft tissue. Without appropriate treatment, redness, warmth, pain, and swelling may expand, and infection can damage tissue or enter the bloodstream. A pocket of pus may form and require drainage. Infection near the eye, hand, foot, or a joint can affect nearby structures. Diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity can make a skin infection harder to manage. Symptoms may change even when the original wound looks small.

Contact a clinician promptly rather than waiting for the skin to improve on its own. Describe when the redness, pain, swelling, or fever began and whether the affected area is enlarging. Keep any wound clean and covered, wash your hands, avoid scratching or squeezing, and raise a swollen limb when practical. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without advice. Mention diabetes, recent surgery, bites, fungal foot infection, or medicines that affect immunity.

Go to emergency care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, black or blistered skin, numbness, high fever or shaking, confusion, faintness, fast breathing, or profound weakness. These warning signs may indicate deep infection or sepsis. Seek prompt advice for a child, an older adult, or anyone with diabetes or reduced immunity, even if the skin changes seem limited.

Ask whether the infection has spread, whether an abscess or wound needs separate treatment, and how to take any prescribed medicine. Ask how to monitor the edge of redness, when improvement should be visible, and which changes require immediate reassessment.
