What should you know about strep and cellulitis?

Strep is a short name for streptococcal bacteria. Some types can move through damaged skin and cause cellulitis in the deeper layers. The area may feel hot, tight, swollen, tender, or painful, with redness that expands around a cut, crack, bite, or wound. A clinician usually cannot confirm the particular bacterium simply by looking at the skin. A collection of pus, an open wound, or another source may need separate evaluation. Arrange medical review when a suspected cellulitis area is spreading, increasingly painful, warm, or swollen.
