What should you know about streaking with cellulitis?

A narrow red line extending from an area of cellulitis toward the body can reflect inflammation along lymphatic channels. It may appear with increasing warmth, swelling, tenderness, or skin redness. Streaking does not establish the cause by itself, but it is a meaningful change to report. The source may be a small cut, blister, bite, injection site, or cracked skin, including cracks linked with Athlete's Foot. A photograph and note of when the line appeared can help describe progression, but an in-person assessment is still needed.

Contact a healthcare service promptly for advice, especially when the line is lengthening or the surrounding area is becoming more painful. Keep any wound covered with a clean dressing and avoid rubbing, massage, shaving over, or applying irritating products to the area. Do not try to drain a lump yourself. If antibiotics are prescribed, follow the schedule and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Check the skin periodically without repeatedly touching it, and tell the clinician about diabetes, immune problems, recent injuries, and medication allergies.

Seek urgent care immediately if streaking is accompanied by fever, shaking chills, severe pain, dizziness, faintness, confusion, marked weakness, fast breathing, or rapidly spreading redness or swelling. These symptoms can accompany a serious infection, including sepsis. Do not wait for the line to reach a particular point or for home measures to work. A child, older adult, or person with Type 2 Diabetes may need especially prompt review.
