Cellulitis spots and skin changes

Cellulitis can start near a cut, scrape, bite, ulcer, injection site, or cracked skin. Athlete's Foot between the toes can create an unnoticed opening. A spot that is painful and expanding is more concerning than a stable mark, but other skin problems can look similar. A clinician may need to examine it to distinguish infection from irritation, allergy, or an abscess.

Seek prompt medical advice for a new spot that is spreading or becoming hotter, more swollen, or more painful. Gently clean any break in the skin, cover it, and avoid scratching, squeezing, or trying to drain it. Marking the outer edge with a pen can help you notice movement, provided the skin is not broken or severely tender.

Use urgent services if the spot expands quickly, pain becomes intense, blisters or dark skin develop, or you feel feverish, faint, confused, or unusually weak. These changes can indicate a serious infection or Sepsis. Contact a clinician promptly if you have Type 2 Diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity.

Ask whether the spot looks like cellulitis, an abscess, or another skin condition; whether a nearby wound needs care; how to track its size; and what improvement should look like after treatment. Ask where to seek help if it spreads overnight.
