Cellulitis on the shoulder: what to know

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper skin and soft tissue, often entering through a small cut, scrape, bite, piercing, or irritated patch that is easy to overlook. The shoulder can become swollen and movement may feel uncomfortable because nearby tissue is inflamed. Skin Redness, Skin Swelling, and Painful Skin are common presentations of cellulitis, but each can also occur with noninfectious problems. A clinician will consider the shape, warmth, tenderness, rate of change, and any wound or drainage.

Have a new, warm, tender, or spreading shoulder patch checked promptly, especially if you have Type 2 Diabetes or a weakened immune system. Do not pierce a lump or apply harsh products. Gently clean any break in the skin, keep it covered if it is draining, and note whether the border is enlarging. If antibiotics are prescribed, follow the full instructions and report worsening symptoms or a medicine reaction.

Get urgent medical care for rapidly spreading redness or swelling, severe pain, pus with worsening illness, Fever, shaking chills, confusion, faintness, fast breathing, or unusual drowsiness. These may indicate that infection is becoming more serious, including Sepsis. Emergency assessment is also appropriate when shoulder swelling is accompanied by marked loss of movement or you feel acutely unwell.

Ask what may have allowed bacteria through the skin, whether the shoulder joint or a deeper structure needs evaluation, how to monitor the border, when improvement should begin after treatment, and what to do if the area becomes more painful.
