Cellulitis rash: how to recognise it and what to do

Cellulitis often affects one area, such as a lower leg, foot, arm, or face. The skin may feel hot, tight, swollen, and painful, with redness or a darker change that is harder to see on some skin tones. The edge can expand, and nearby lymph nodes may become tender.

A cellulitis rash is not the same as every itchy or blotchy rash. Contact irritation, eczema, bites, and other conditions can resemble it. A small cut, ulcer, bite, injection site, or Athlete's Foot may be the entry point, but you may not notice a break in the skin.

Seek prompt medical review for a new rash that is warm, painful, swollen, or spreading. Keep the skin clean and dry, cover any open area with a clean dressing, and avoid scratching, squeezing, or applying unfamiliar products. Photographing the area and marking its edge can help show change over time.

Follow prescribed treatment exactly if Cellulitis is diagnosed. Resting the affected limb in a comfortable raised position may ease swelling, but it does not replace treatment. Tell the clinician about Type 2 Diabetes, poor circulation, wounds, or previous episodes.

Get emergency help if the rash spreads rapidly, pain is severe, the skin becomes purple or dusky, blisters appear, or you develop Fever, shaking, confusion, faintness, or breathing difficulty. These signs can occur with a serious infection, including Sepsis. Facial or eye-area swelling needs urgent review because important structures may be affected.

Ask whether the rash fits Cellulitis, what may have allowed bacteria in, how to monitor its border, and when improvement should be checked. Ask how to manage a wound or Athlete's Foot and which symptoms mean you should return immediately.
