What should you know about cellulitis pathophysiology?

Short answer

Cellulitis develops when bacteria cross a damaged skin barrier and trigger inflammation in deeper skin and nearby tissue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

A break in the skin can let bacteria enter

How the infection develops

Healthy skin acts as a barrier. A cut, crack, ulcer, bite, burn, injection site, or irritated area can give bacteria an entry point. The body's immune response brings fluid and immune cells into the tissue, producing warmth, redness, swelling, and tenderness. Because the process is below the very surface, the skin may feel tight and painful even when there is no open wound to see.

The infection can extend through nearby tissue and along lymphatic channels. Athlete's Foot may repeatedly break the skin between the toes. Type 2 Diabetes, swelling, poor circulation, and reduced sensation can make healing or early recognition more difficult.

Applying the mechanism to care

Have new, expanding redness or painful swelling assessed promptly so a clinician can distinguish cellulitis from an abscess, dermatitis, or another problem. Clean minor breaks in the skin, cover them, and avoid scratching or squeezing. Elevate a swollen limb when resting and treat contributing skin problems as advised.

Antibiotics may be prescribed when bacterial cellulitis is diagnosed. Take them according to the prescription and report deterioration, medicine reactions, or inability to take doses. Improvement in tenderness may lag behind changes in redness, so monitor the whole picture.

Signs of deeper or systemic spread

Seek emergency care for severe or rapidly escalating pain, fast-spreading redness, blisters, skin colour change, numbness, weakness, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or Fever with shaking. These signs may indicate deeper tissue involvement or Sepsis.

Questions for your appointment

Ask what may have breached the skin barrier, whether an abscess or deeper structure is involved, how to prevent recurrence, and which symptoms should prompt reassessment.

Questions people ask

Why does cellulitis cause swelling?

Inflammation increases fluid and immune activity in the affected tissue, which can make the skin swollen and tight.

Can cellulitis spread beyond the original wound?

Yes. Infection and inflammation can extend through nearby deeper tissue, so an expanding border should be assessed promptly.
