What should you know about cellulitis of pinna?

The pinna is the visible outer part of the ear. Infection can enter through a small cut, scratch, piercing, insect bite, or irritated skin, even when the opening is hard to see. The affected ear may feel hot and become increasingly sore. Cellulitis is different from a simple surface irritation because infection spreads through deeper skin layers. Athlete's Foot can create cracked skin elsewhere that permits bacteria to enter, while Type 2 Diabetes can make skin infections harder to manage.

Arrange a same-day clinical assessment if the ear is becoming red, swollen, warm, or painful. A clinician may prescribe antibiotics and will check whether the infection involves nearby tissue or another ear condition. Keep the area clean and avoid squeezing, scratching, piercing, or applying leftover creams. Rest and drink fluids. Do not place objects into the ear canal, and follow the prescribed treatment for the full instructed course.

Seek urgent help if redness or swelling spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, the ear changes colour, or you develop Fever. Confusion, unusual drowsiness, faintness, rapid breathing, or feeling very unwell can signal Sepsis and require emergency care. Prompt review is also needed if treatment is not improving the area or if you have diabetes or reduced immunity.
