Cellulitis of the Periorbital Region: What to Know

Periorbital cellulitis affects the skin and soft tissues around the eye, often causing eyelid redness, warmth, tenderness, and swelling. It may follow a nearby skin injury, insect bite, sinus problem, or another infection. Vision and eye movement are usually checked because orbital cellulitis affects deeper tissues and requires a different level of care. A photograph or home observation cannot reliably make that distinction.

Arrange prompt medical assessment, particularly when swelling is new or worsening. Keep the area clean, avoid rubbing the eye, and do not press on a swollen eyelid or use someone else's eye drops. A clinician may prescribe antibiotics and arrange follow-up to confirm that redness and swelling are settling. Take treatment exactly as directed and mention allergies, recent sinus symptoms, injuries, and contact-lens use.

Seek emergency help for pain when moving the eye, reduced or double vision, a bulging eye, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, or rapidly increasing swelling. Fever or chills can occur but are not required for serious disease. If the skin becomes markedly painful, dusky, blistered, or numb, seek urgent care. Whole-body symptoms such as faintness or confusion may indicate Sepsis.

Ask how the clinician distinguished periorbital from orbital cellulitis, how often the eye should be checked, and when improvement should be visible. Clarify the antibiotic schedule, safe cleaning, follow-up arrangements, and exactly which vision or eye-movement changes require emergency return.
