What should you know about cellulitis lymphangitis?

Lymphangitis describes inflammation of lymph vessels, which help drain fluid and support immune responses. When bacteria from a skin infection enter these channels, thin red or darker lines may extend from the original area toward the groin, armpit, or neck. The nearby lymph nodes may feel swollen or sore. This pattern can occur alongside Cellulitis and suggests the infection is moving beyond its starting point.

The lines can be harder to see on some skin tones, so warmth, tenderness, swelling, and feeling unwell also matter. A clinician may examine the original wound, trace the affected area, and check for Fever or other signs of wider infection.

Arrange urgent same-day medical assessment if red streaking appears, especially when it is progressing or accompanied by worsening skin redness, Painful Skin, swelling, or tender glands. Keep the entry wound clean and covered, avoid massage and squeezing, and do not apply irritating substances. Rest the affected limb in a comfortable position while arranging care.

Treatment may require prescribed antibiotics directed at the skin infection and care for the original break. Tell the clinician about Athlete's Foot, bites, ulcers, Type 2 Diabetes, immune conditions, allergies, or previous infections. Do not use someone else's medicine or save doses for later.

Go to emergency care if the streaks are rapidly advancing, the pain is severe, the skin becomes blistered or dark, or you develop confusion, faintness, shaking chills, fast breathing, or severe weakness. These symptoms can accompany Sepsis. Breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or inability to keep fluids down also needs immediate help.
