What should you know about cellulitis on the stomach?

On the stomach, cellulitis may begin around a cut, insect bite, surgical wound, piercing, inflamed hair follicle, or irritated patch of skin. It can produce warmth, redness, swelling, tenderness and a surface that feels tight. The affected skin may enlarge beyond its starting point, while a pocket of pus may suggest an abscess rather than cellulitis alone. Athlete's Foot can create breaks in the skin that help bacteria enter, and Type 2 Diabetes may affect how well the body controls infection.

Contact a clinician promptly if abdominal redness, warmth, swelling or pain is developing or spreading. Have the area examined rather than relying on appearance alone, particularly around a recent operation or wound. Follow prescribed antibiotics carefully, keep the skin gently clean and dry, and cover an open wound as instructed. Do not pierce, squeeze or massage the area, and avoid creams that sting or conceal changes. Tell the clinician about recent procedures, bites, wounds and medicines.

Seek urgent care for rapidly expanding redness, severe or disproportionate pain, fever, vomiting, confusion, faintness, marked weakness, or skin that becomes dusky, blistered or numb. Abdominal skin changes after surgery need quick review. A serious infection can progress to Sepsis, so systemic symptoms or a sudden decline should be treated as an emergency.

Ask whether the infection is limited to skin, whether an abscess or wound complication is present, how to monitor the border, and when improvement should begin. Ask which warning signs mean you should return urgently.
