Cellulitis in the jaw: what to know

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection affecting deeper skin. Around the jaw, it may follow a skin wound, shaving irritation, an infected spot, or a dental or gum problem. The skin can become warm, red, swollen, firm, and painful. Swelling under the jaw, tooth pain, gum tenderness, or difficulty opening the mouth may point to a nearby mouth or dental source rather than a simple surface irritation. A healthcare professional may need to examine both the skin and the mouth.

Arrange same-day medical or dental assessment for new jaw swelling with redness, warmth, or pain. Keep the skin clean and do not squeeze a lump or apply irritant products. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics or delay care while waiting for a dental appointment. Tell the clinician about tooth pain, recent dental work, wounds, fever, and medicines. Treatment may require prescribed antibiotics and management of the dental or skin source.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, a muffled voice, rapidly increasing swelling under the jaw or tongue, inability to open the mouth, severe weakness, confusion, or faintness. Fever with spreading redness also needs urgent attention. These signs can indicate extension into deeper tissues or Sepsis and should not be managed at home.
