Cellulitis after a tattoo: what to know

A tattoo normally causes some local tenderness and surface changes during healing. Cellulitis is a deeper infection: the surrounding skin may become hot, increasingly painful, swollen, or red, and the change can move beyond the ink. Oozing, worsening tenderness, or feeling unwell deserves attention. Ink colour or a normal healing crust cannot reliably establish the cause.

Contact a clinician promptly if the area is getting larger, hotter, more painful, or more swollen, or if drainage is increasing. Keep the tattoo clean and follow the artist’s aftercare instructions, but do not pick crusts, cover it with unapproved creams, or use leftover antibiotics. Avoid swimming until the skin has healed and note the edge of redness so progression is easier to describe.

Get urgent help for fever, rapidly spreading skin redness, severe pain, red streaking, dizziness, confusion, or unusual weakness. These can indicate a spreading infection or sepsis. Painful skin and skin swelling are useful words when explaining symptoms.

Ask which features suggest infection rather than expected healing, whether a swab or prescription treatment is needed, how to protect the tattoo while it heals, and what change should trigger re-evaluation.
