Can cellulitis be fatal?

Cellulitis is an infection of deeper skin tissue. Without timely care, bacteria can extend through nearby tissue or enter the bloodstream. This may lead to Sepsis, a dangerous whole-body response to infection. Risk is higher when infection is extensive, treatment is delayed, or a person has diabetes, poor circulation, immune suppression or a wound that is difficult to protect. Fatal outcomes are not the usual course, but the possibility is why a suspected infection should not be ignored.

Contact a clinician promptly for new spreading redness, warmth, swelling or skin pain. Keep the area clean and avoid picking, squeezing or applying irritating products. Marking the edge of redness can help show whether it is advancing, but this should not delay care. Tell the clinician about recent injuries, Athlete's Foot, bites, procedures, medication allergies and Type 2 Diabetes. If treatment is prescribed, follow the schedule and report deterioration or new symptoms.

Call emergency services for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, blue or mottled skin, or rapidly worsening illness. Seek urgent assessment for shaking chills, a high temperature, fast-spreading swelling, severe pain, or facial infection near the eye or mouth. These features may signal a spreading infection or Sepsis and need immediate evaluation rather than home observation.

Ask how extensive the infection appears, which changes should prompt a return visit, and how soon improvement should begin after treatment. Ask whether an underlying wound, fungal infection or medical condition needs attention to prevent another episode.
