Ciprofloxacin and cellulitis

Cellulitis can involve different bacteria, and ciprofloxacin may not provide the coverage a particular skin infection needs. The clinician also considers the infection's location, severity, possible wound or dental source, allergies, kidney function, interactions, and previous antibiotic exposure. A red or swollen area is not automatically cellulitis, so taking an unsuitable medicine can delay the right diagnosis. Ciprofloxacin has its own precautions and should only be used when a prescriber decides that it fits the situation.

Do not start leftover ciprofloxacin or use another person's tablets. Arrange an assessment for spreading redness, warmth, tenderness, or swelling. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention tendon problems, nerve symptoms, heart rhythm concerns, pregnancy, kidney disease, allergies, and recent antibiotics. If ciprofloxacin has already been prescribed, follow the label and contact the prescriber or pharmacist before making changes. Keep the affected skin clean and avoid squeezing or puncturing it.

Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, severe or escalating pain, blistering, dark skin, faintness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or pronounced weakness. Fever with a worsening skin infection needs prompt review. Facial or eye involvement, or difficulty swallowing, warrants urgent assessment. If symptoms fail to improve or worsen after treatment begins, contact the prescriber promptly. People with Type 2 Diabetes or reduced immunity should seek advice early, since an infection can progress and contribute to Sepsis.

Ask which bacteria the chosen treatment targets, why ciprofloxacin is or is not appropriate, how to take the prescribed medicine, and which side effects require immediate advice. Ask what improvement should look like and when a review is needed.
