Cellulitis after a bug bite: home care and warning signs

A bite can cause a small itchy, raised area, while cellulitis commonly presents with redness, warmth, tenderness, and swelling that expands beyond the original spot. The bite may be the entry point for bacteria, but an itchy bump alone does not establish cellulitis. Scratching, broken skin, or a retained splinter can increase irritation. Athlete's Foot may create unnoticed cracks elsewhere on the foot. A clinician may ask about the bite, inspect the surrounding skin, and check for fever or swollen lymph nodes.

Wash the bite gently with soap and water, pat it dry, and cover broken skin with a clean dressing. A cool compress can ease itch or local discomfort. Keep fingernails short and avoid scratching, squeezing, or trying to drain a bump. Do not put bleach, alcohol, toothpaste, oils, or leftover antibiotics on the area. Take a clear photo and lightly mark the outer edge of redness so spread is easier to recognize. Arrange medical advice if redness, warmth, pain, swelling, or drainage is increasing.

Seek urgent help if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, a blister or pus-filled area develops, or you develop fever, chills, dizziness, confusion, or marked weakness. Emergency help is needed for trouble breathing or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat after a bite. People with Type 2 Diabetes, reduced immunity, or poor circulation should contact a clinician early because skin infections may progress without dramatic surface changes.
