What should you know about cellulitis and tattoos?

Fresh tattooed skin may be tender, mildly red, and slightly swollen at first. Those changes should gradually settle as the surface heals. Cellulitis affects deeper tissue and is more concerning when redness expands beyond the tattoo, warmth increases, pain worsens, or swelling becomes pronounced. Ink colour can make redness harder to judge, so compare the surrounding skin and track changes rather than focusing only on the design.

Follow the tattoo artist’s basic hygiene instructions while arranging medical advice for changing symptoms. Wash hands before touching the area, clean it gently as directed, and avoid scratching, soaking, swimming, or applying unapproved products. Do not seal a suspected infection under a tight covering. Tell the clinician when the tattoo was done, which aftercare products were used, and whether equipment or ink hygiene was uncertain.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe or escalating pain, pus with worsening swelling, red streaks, fever, shaking, confusion, faintness, or breathing difficulty. A rash limited to the ink can also reflect an allergic or inflammatory reaction, which still needs assessment if it is persistent, spreading, or painful.

Ask whether the appearance fits normal healing, an allergic reaction, or cellulitis; how to dress the area; and whether the tattoo should be paused, covered, or reviewed by a skin specialist.
