What should you know about cellulitis and impetigo?

Cellulitis commonly produces a tender, warm, red, swollen area that can expand. Impetigo more often causes superficial sores, blisters, or crusting, frequently around the nose and mouth or on exposed skin. Either infection can follow a scratch, insect bite, eczema flare, or another break in the skin. The appearance can overlap, so do not rely on a photograph or a single feature to diagnose it.

Arrange medical advice when redness is spreading, the skin is painful and hot, or crusted sores are multiplying. Wash hands after touching the area, avoid picking, and use a separate towel until a clinician advises otherwise. Keep the skin gently clean and covered if it is draining. Use prescribed treatment as instructed; do not share leftover antibiotics or apply strong steroid cream to an unassessed infection.

Seek urgent care for rapidly advancing redness, severe pain, fever, marked drowsiness, confusion, red streaks, or swelling near an eye. Prompt assessment is also wise for a young child, diabetes, a weakened immune system, or infection that is not settling after treatment begins.

Ask whether the pattern fits surface impetigo, deeper cellulitis, or another condition; how to clean the area; and when it is safe to return to school, work, sport, or close contact.
