CDK4/6 inhibitors for breast cancer

The standard name is CDK4/6 inhibitors, sometimes shortened incorrectly to CD4/6. Whether one is appropriate depends on the tumour subtype, stage, previous treatment, other health conditions, and the treatment goal.

CDK4 and CDK6 are proteins that help cells move through the cell-division cycle. Blocking them can hold susceptible cancer cells at a checkpoint and slow their growth. Endocrine therapy addresses hormone-driven signalling through a different pathway, which is why the medicines are often paired.

Report diarrhoea early, maintain fluids if your team says this is safe for you, and do not start an anti-diarrhoeal medicine without following the plan they provided.

Contact the oncology service promptly for fever, chills, signs of infection, persistent diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, unusual bruising or bleeding, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, or severe fatigue. Low white blood cells can occur without obvious symptoms, which makes scheduled blood tests important.

Seek urgent care for new or worsening shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Use the emergency instructions supplied by your cancer centre, including its after-hours contact route.
