Causes of weakness and fatigue

Short answer
Weakness and fatigue may reflect poor sleep, stress, dehydration, infection, anaemia, or an ongoing health condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Describe the feeling
- Explain whether you feel sleepy, drained, dizzy or physically weak.
- Bring a timeline
- Include onset, progression, sleep, diet, medicines and recent illness.
What it may mean
Fatigue is a reduced sense of energy, while weakness can mean reduced muscle power or simply feeling unable to manage usual tasks. Burnout, Alcohol Use Disorder, COVID-19 and Dehydration can affect energy in different ways.
Persistent symptoms may occur with Anaemia, Coeliac Disease, Chronic Kidney Disease or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Look for clues such as breathlessness, paleness, thirst, changes in urine, digestive symptoms, unrefreshing sleep, fever or a recent illness. A clear timeline helps separate a short recovery period from a problem needing assessment.
What you can do now
Keep a regular sleep routine, drink fluids, eat balanced meals and use gentle activity within your limits. Note whether weakness is general or affects one side, and record medicines, alcohol intake, recent infections, sleep quality and changes in mood.
Book a clinical review if symptoms interfere with work, study, movement or self-care, or do not improve with rest and hydration. A clinician may examine muscle strength and order tests based on the pattern, such as checks for blood count, thyroid function or kidney health.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for sudden one-sided weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion or inability to walk. Seek prompt advice for worsening weakness, persistent vomiting, very little urine, black stools, unexplained weight loss or fatigue with marked paleness.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pattern suggest reduced muscle power or low energy? Could my medicines, sleep, diet or recent illness contribute? Which examinations or blood tests are appropriate, and what changes should make me seek help sooner?
