Causes of restless legs

Short answer
Restless legs may be linked to low iron stores, kidney disease, nerve problems, medicines or restless legs syndrome itself.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- An urge to move that worsens at rest and may ease with movement
- Possible links
- Low iron, kidney disease, nerve problems, medicines or family tendency
- Assessment
- A clinician may review medicines and check iron or other health factors
How causes can overlap
The typical symptom is an uncomfortable urge to move the legs that starts or worsens during rest and may ease temporarily with movement. Iron Deficiency Anaemia or low iron stores can be associated with this pattern, even when tiredness is not the main complaint.
Chronic Kidney Disease and Peripheral Neuropathy can also accompany restless sensations, although they do not explain every case. Pregnancy, family tendency, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and some medicines may influence symptoms. A clinician considers timing, sleep disruption, other symptoms and medicines rather than relying on the sensation alone.
What to do next
Keep a short record of when the sensations begin, whether movement helps, how sleep is affected, and what medicines or supplements you take. Gentle activity, regular sleep timing and reducing evening stimulants may help some people.
Arrange an assessment if symptoms are frequent, worsening or disrupting sleep. Blood tests may check iron status and other causes. Do not begin Iron Supplementation without advice, because the correct product and dose depend on your results and health history.
When to seek urgent care
Restless legs alone is usually assessed routinely, but seek urgent help for a suddenly swollen, hot or painful one-sided leg, chest pain, breathlessness, new weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Those features suggest a problem other than ordinary restless sensations.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms meet the pattern of Restless Legs Syndrome, whether iron or kidney tests are needed, and whether a medicine could be contributing. Discuss sleep impact and any numbness, burning or weakness in the legs.
