What Causes Red Moles on the Body?

Cherry angiomas, also called Campbell de Morgan spots, can appear as bright red, purple-red, or deeper red dots. They may be smooth or slightly raised and can occur on the trunk, arms, legs, or other skin. Their colour comes from blood vessels close to the skin surface. They are different from pigmented moles, although a person may use the word mole for either type of spot.

A single red spot can be difficult to identify from a description alone. Irritation, minor injury, or another blood-vessel growth can alter its appearance. A clinician may inspect the spot with magnification and decide whether any further examination is needed.

Take a clear photograph in good light and note whether the spot is new, enlarging, crusting, or catching on clothing. Arrange a skin assessment for a spot that changes quickly, develops an irregular border or mixed colours, bleeds without clear injury, forms a persistent crust, or fails to heal. Seek prompt care if bleeding does not settle with steady gentle pressure. These signs do not identify a specific diagnosis, but they warrant direct inspection rather than self-treatment.
