What should you know about causes of preseptal cellulitis?

A scratch, insect bite, blocked gland or recent procedure can break the skin barrier. Infection may also extend from the sinuses or a nearby area of facial skin. Conditions such as Athlete's Foot can create breaks in the skin elsewhere, while Type 2 Diabetes may make infections harder to control. Preseptal cellulitis affects tissues in front of the eye socket; it is different from infection deeper behind the eye.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a swollen, red or tender eyelid, especially if the change is spreading. A clinician may examine vision and eye movement, inspect the skin and look for a source such as a wound or sinus problem. Treatment commonly involves prescribed antibiotics and care of the entry point; do not squeeze the area or use leftover medicine.

Seek urgent care for vision changes, pain when moving the eye, a bulging eye, reduced eye movement, severe headache, marked drowsiness or rapidly worsening swelling. Fever or feeling very unwell also needs prompt attention. These features can signal deeper infection or a serious whole-body response such as Sepsis.

Ask what may have allowed bacteria to enter, whether the sinuses or eyelid glands are involved, how soon improvement should be checked, and which symptoms mean you should return immediately.
