Short answer

Poor appetite can result from a short-term illness, digestive problem, medicine, emotional strain, or another health condition, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Poor appetite can result from a short-term illness, digestive problem, medicine, emotional strain, or another health condition, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter. A temporary reduction in hunger may settle as you recover, while ongoing loss of appetite can affect hydration, nutrition, energy, and body weight.

What poor appetite can mean

Viral illnesses such as [Influenza](/conditions/influenza/) and [COVID-19](/conditions/covid-19/) may reduce hunger alongside fever, tiredness, nausea, changes in smell, or other respiratory symptoms. Stomach and bowel infections such as [Gastroenteritis](/conditions/gastroenteritis/) can make eating difficult because of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, or fever.

Upper-abdominal conditions, including [Gastritis](/conditions/gastritis/) and [Peptic Ulcer](/conditions/peptic-ulcer/), may cause discomfort, burning pain, early fullness, or nausea around meals. Liver inflammation such as [Hepatitis A](/conditions/hepatitis-a/) can occur with marked tiredness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Low mood, persistent worry, grief, and [Depression](/conditions/depression/) can change appetite and eating routines. Less commonly, a continuing appetite change with unexplained weight loss, persistent upper-abdominal pain, or jaundice may need assessment for a serious condition such as [Pancreatic Cancer](/conditions/pancreatic-cancer/). These symptoms do not establish a diagnosis on their own.

What you can do now

Notice when the change began, whether hunger varies through the day, and which symptoms occur with it. Record vomiting, bowel changes, pain, fever, mood changes, medicines, and any change in weight. Small, regular meals may be easier than large portions; choose nourishing foods you tolerate and sip fluids regularly.

Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice, even if you suspect it is affecting appetite. Arrange a primary-care review if poor appetite persists, keeps returning, makes it hard to maintain fluids or food, or follows a new medicine or ongoing health problem. A clinician may review your symptoms, medicines, hydration, nutrition, and need for tests.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help if poor appetite occurs with confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine with marked illness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and dizziness.

Contact a clinician soon if eating remains difficult, clothing becomes noticeably looser without intending to lose weight, swallowing is painful, or low mood and loss of interest are affecting daily life. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a long-term condition may need earlier advice when intake falls.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: What causes fit the timing and symptoms I have? Could any medicine or supplement be affecting my appetite? How can I protect hydration and nutrition while this is investigated? Which changes should make me seek urgent help? Would checking my mood, weight, or digestive symptoms help guide the next step?

Questions people ask

Can an infection cause poor appetite?

Yes. Infection can reduce hunger through fever, inflammation, nausea, tiredness, altered smell, or digestive symptoms. Fluids and tolerated nourishing foods remain useful while you recover.

When should poor appetite be checked?

Arrange a medical review when the change persists, recurs, causes unintended weight loss, limits fluids or food, or comes with pain, vomiting, jaundice, swallowing difficulty, or low mood.

Could poor appetite be related to mood?

Low mood, anxiety, grief, and depression can alter hunger and eating routines. Mention changes in sleep, interest, energy, and mood during an appointment.
