Causes of pins and needles in hands and feet

A limb that tingles briefly after pressure may improve when you change position. Repeated or lasting symptoms can reflect peripheral neuropathy, which affects nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Type 2 diabetes can damage these nerves over time. Vitamin B12 deficiency and hypothyroidism are other possible contributors. Anxiety or a panic episode may cause tingling alongside fast breathing, trembling, or fear. Symptoms in one side of the body, especially when they start suddenly with weakness, speech trouble, facial drooping, or vision change, need emergency attention because stroke or a transient ischaemic attack may be involved.

Note where the sensation occurs, how long it lasts, whether it is symmetrical, and what happens with movement. Mention pain, weakness, balance problems, skin changes, thirst, fatigue, or changes in weight. Protect numb areas from burns and cuts because reduced sensation can hide an injury. A clinician may check strength and reflexes and consider blood tests for glucose, thyroid function, or vitamin levels.

Get emergency help for sudden one-sided numbness or weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe dizziness, loss of coordination, or a sudden severe headache. Arrange medical assessment if tingling keeps returning, spreads, affects walking, causes weakness, or does not settle after changing position.
