Causes of perioral dermatitis around the mouth

This condition causes clusters of small red or skin-coloured bumps, often with dryness, burning, or sensitivity. It may follow repeated use of a steroid cream on the face, even when that cream initially seemed to calm irritation. Heavy moisturisers, occlusive cosmetics, fragranced products, toothpaste ingredients, saliva, and friction can also aggravate the area. The rash may spare a narrow rim immediately beside the lips, which helps distinguish it from some forms of contact irritation. Similar-looking pimples can have different causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A flare is not a sign that the skin is unclean. Scrubbing, squeezing, or layering several active products can increase inflammation and prolong recovery.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the rash persists, spreads, or returns. Until then, simplify facial care: use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and only bland products that do not sting. Avoid self-starting a steroid cream around the mouth; if you have been using one regularly, ask the prescriber how to stop safely because rebound redness can occur. Do not pick the bumps. A clinician may discuss topical antibiotic therapy or, for more extensive disease, oral antibiotics, depending on the examination and your medical history.

Seek prompt medical advice if swelling involves the lips or eyes, the skin becomes rapidly painful or hot, blisters or crusting appear, or you feel unwell. Urgent assessment is appropriate for breathing difficulty or sudden facial swelling, which can indicate a serious allergic reaction rather than perioral dermatitis.
