Causes of light bleeding after sex

A single small spot may follow surface irritation, but bleeding that repeats, has no clear explanation or occurs after menopause should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.

Dry or delicate vaginal tissue can be irritated by friction, particularly around menopause, during breastfeeding or when arousal and lubrication are limited. Inflammation of the cervix or vagina, including that caused by chlamydia, may also produce bleeding, discharge or pelvic discomfort.

Cervical polyps and changes on the surface of the cervix can bleed when touched. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer and vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex, but the symptom alone cannot show which cause is responsible.

Pause sex if it is painful or bleeding continues. A water-based lubricant may reduce friction when dryness is the likely trigger, but it should not delay assessment of recurrent bleeding. Record the colour and amount, whether bleeding also occurs between periods, and any pain, unusual discharge, odour or urinary symptoms.

A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix, offer infection testing, review cervical screening history or arrange further tests according to your age, pregnancy possibility and symptoms.

Book a medical appointment if bleeding after sex recurs, happens after menopause or comes with unusual discharge or pelvic pain. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or bleeding with pain when pregnancy is possible.
