What should you know about causes of itchy eyes and runny nose?

Allergies can activate the lining of the eyes and nose at the same time. Allergic conjunctivitis tends to cause itching, watering, and redness, while allergic rhinitis adds sneezing, a clear runny nose, or congestion. Pollen, house dust mites, and pet allergens can trigger symptoms; exposure around bedding or after contact with an animal may provide a useful clue. Irritant exposure to smoke, dust, fragrance, or chemical fumes can also make the eyes water and the nose run. A cold may cause a runny nose with tiredness, sore throat, cough, or a blocked nose, but eye itching is often more prominent in allergy patterns.

Symptoms may be seasonal, linked to a room or activity, or present throughout the year. The pattern does not identify one cause by itself, particularly when several triggers overlap.

Avoid rubbing the eyes, rinse your face after outdoor exposure, and keep windows or fans from blowing dust directly toward you. Wash hands after touching pets and use clean bedding practices if dust exposure seems relevant. Lubricating eye drops or allergy medication may help some people, but ask a pharmacist or clinician which option fits your age, contact-lens use, pregnancy, and other medicines. Keep a brief record of places, seasons, pets, and products linked with flare-ups.

Seek urgent help for vision loss, severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, eye injury, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat with breathing difficulty. Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, affect one eye strongly, produce thick discharge, or keep returning despite trigger reduction. A clinician can distinguish allergy from infection, irritation, or another eye problem.
