What postmenopausal bleeding may mean
Bleeding after menopause can begin in the vulva, vagina, cervix, womb lining, urinary tract or rectum, so confirming where the blood comes from matters. Fragile tissue linked with low oestrogen may bleed after sex or examination. Polyps and a thickened womb lining can also cause spotting or a heavier flow.
Womb cancer can present with bleeding after menopause, and cervical or vaginal cancer can also present this way. These are possible explanations, not conclusions based on the symptom. An examination and tests are needed to distinguish them from non-cancerous causes.
Arrange an assessment
Contact a gynaecology or primary-care service promptly, even if the bleeding stops. Record when it began, whether it followed sex, how quickly pads become soaked, any clots or pain, and every medicine or hormone product you use. Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medicine unless its prescriber tells you to.
Assessment may include a pelvic examination and tests of the womb lining, depending on the findings. Bring details of your last natural period, previous cervical screening, past gynaecological procedures and any family history of relevant cancers.
