What causes frequent sneezing?

Sneezing is a protective reflex that clears the nose. Repeated sneezing with an itchy nose, watery eyes, and clear discharge often occurs with allergic rhinitis. House dust mite allergy may be worse indoors or on waking, while pet allergy can follow contact with an animal or its surroundings. A common cold more often brings a sore throat, blocked or runny nose, cough, and a changing discharge.

Perfume, smoke, cleaning products, dust, cold air, and bright light can trigger sneezing without an allergy. Notice where and when it happens, whether symptoms follow a particular exposure, and whether fever or general illness is present. Sneezing alone does not identify one specific condition.

Avoid smoke and strong fragrances, ventilate rooms, and wash hands when respiratory infections are circulating. If dust seems relevant, use regular cleaning and wash bedding as directed by the product instructions. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is suitable, especially if you have other conditions, take medicines, or are pregnant. Avoid using decongestant nasal sprays for longer than the label advises.

Seek urgent help for sneezing with swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Arrange medical advice if symptoms persist, disturb sleep, cause recurrent nosebleeds, or come with facial pain, high fever, or breathing difficulty. Persistent symptoms may need an examination to separate allergy from infection or another nasal problem.
