Short answer

Frequent farting and burping often come from swallowed air, fizzy drinks, food fermentation, constipation, or digestive intolerance.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Upper gas
Burping is often linked with swallowed air
Lower gas
Bowel bacteria produce gas during digestion

How to interpret the pattern

Burping mainly reflects air released from the upper digestive tract. Eating quickly, chewing gum, drinking through a straw, smoking, or talking while eating can increase swallowed air. Farting is produced when bowel bacteria break down food, and it may increase after certain carbohydrates, beans, dairy, or sugar-free sweeteners. Bloating, cramps, loose stools, or constipation can occur alongside these symptoms.

A repeated relationship with dairy may fit lactose intolerance; symptoms after a broader range of foods may fit food intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome. Ongoing diarrhoea after unsafe water or travel can occur with giardiasis. Coeliac disease and Helicobacter Pylori Infection are other conditions a clinician may consider when symptoms persist, especially with weight loss, anaemia, or upper-abdominal discomfort.

Steps that may help

Eat slowly, take smaller mouthfuls, and reduce fizzy drinks and gum for a trial period. Keep a simple diary of meals, bowel movements, pain, and gas rather than removing many foods at once. Treat constipation with regular movement, fluids, and gradual fibre changes unless advised otherwise. A clinician or nutrition counsellor can help test patterns safely without creating nutritional gaps.

When to get medical advice

Arrange an assessment if symptoms are new and persistent, interfere with daily life, or come with ongoing diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, blood in the stool, black stools, or significant abdominal pain. Seek urgent help for severe pain with a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, or inability to pass stool or gas.

Questions to take along

Ask which foods or medicines could be contributing, whether testing for intolerance or infection is suitable, and how to change your diet without losing important nutrients.

Questions people ask

Should I stop all dairy foods?

Not automatically. Record the timing of symptoms and discuss a structured trial with a clinician, particularly if dairy provides important nutrients.

Severe pain, a markedly swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, or inability to pass stool or gas needs urgent medical attention.
