What should you know about causes of excessive thirst at night?

Thirst can increase after sweating, exercise, fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, salty meals or alcohol. A warm bedroom, mouth breathing and some medicines can leave the mouth dry without causing whole-body dehydration. Heat exhaustion can cause thirst with weakness, headache, dizziness and heavy sweating. Dehydration is more concerning when urine becomes darker, urination becomes less frequent, or standing causes light-headedness.

Persistent thirst with frequent urination, blurred vision, unusual hunger or unexplained weight change can occur with diabetes or prediabetes. Kidney disease can alter fluid balance and may cause swelling, changes in urination or tiredness. These symptoms do not identify one diagnosis by themselves.

Sip water regularly during the day and keep the bedroom cool. Replace fluids after sweating or illness, and avoid relying on very salty drinks or alcohol. Note how often you wake thirsty, how much you urinate, recent heat exposure, medicines and any weight change. Do not force large amounts of water quickly, particularly if a clinician has advised fluid restriction. A clinician can check blood glucose, hydration and kidney function when the pattern persists.

Seek prompt medical advice for ongoing thirst with frequent urination, vomiting, marked weakness, confusion, new swelling or reduced urination. Get urgent help for severe drowsiness, fainting, difficulty breathing, inability to keep fluids down or signs of heat illness such as confusion or collapse. IV fluid therapy may be considered by clinicians when dehydration is significant and oral fluids are not enough.
