What should you know about causes of early miscarriage at 4 weeks?

At this stage, pregnancy development depends on successful fertilisation, chromosome copying, implantation, and early placental formation. A chance chromosome error can prevent continued development. Less commonly, the risk may be influenced by uterine differences, poorly controlled thyroid or metabolic illness, certain infections, or a condition affecting blood clotting or immunity.

Seek emergency care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, difficulty breathing, or feeling very weak. These symptoms can occur with internal bleeding from an ectopic pregnancy, which requires urgent assessment even if bleeding from the vagina is light.

Heavy bleeding that rapidly soaks pads, severe pain not controlled by advised medication, fever, chills, offensive discharge, or feeling acutely unwell also needs immediate medical help. If blood group treatment or follow-up testing is recommended, the clinical team will explain when it is needed.
