How mosquitoes cause dengue

The mosquito passes the virus through its bite while feeding. Dengue does not spread through ordinary casual contact, although a person with dengue can help infect mosquitoes that bite them. Symptoms often begin after an interval and may include fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, and joint pain. Easy bruising or bleeding is more concerning, particularly as fever changes. A symptom pattern cannot confirm dengue because other infections can look similar; travel history, mosquito exposure, examination, and testing may be needed.

Rest, drink fluids, and record temperature and symptom changes. Avoid further mosquito bites by using screens, long clothing, and an appropriate repellent so mosquitoes do not pick up the virus and pass it on. Ask a clinician which pain or fever medicine is suitable; avoid self-starting medicines that may increase bleeding risk. Arrange a GP consultation if fever follows mosquito exposure or travel, especially if symptoms are worsening.

Seek emergency help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, or unusual sleepiness. Seek prompt medical advice for persistent fever, worsening headache, easy bruising, or inability to drink. Warning signs can develop as fever settles, so improvement in temperature does not always mean the illness is over.
